It’s The Side of Extreme Tarot Card Reading Rarely Seen, But That’s Why It’s Needed
‘Reading Tarot Cards Is My Quirkiest Anxiety Management Tool–But It Totally Works’
The fortune-telling deck may be more healing than you think.
Last fall, I stopped a networking job in New York. I’d been at it for decades and was deeply burned out. I stressed.
Panic is familiar to me. I see a therapist because of my anxiety, and that I really do the research-backed remedies: yoga, running, you name it. But in the throes of on-edge feels, sometimes the one thing that helps me exists outside the realm of reason: tarot cards.
Of i thought about this course, my loved ones stated the exact same words that are wise. But whenever the cards "informed " me, it felt more like I was coming into my conclusions, giving me that good advice.
My therapist thinks that this is hilarious. "You write about health and science. Why tarot? " she asks. My explanation: During my two weeks of terror, I couldn’t bring myself to run and could hardly eat. It wasn’t before I switched into my deck that I could function again. Seriously. The cards that I pulled–a Nine of Swords and an Ace of Pentacles–roughly translated to: You’ve been given an opportunity you’ve been waiting for, and you’re reacting with melodrama and imagining the worst. Chill. Accept this gift.
Of course, my loved ones stated the exact same words that are wise. But whenever the cards "informed " me, it felt more like I was coming into my conclusions, giving me that good advice. I could hear my rational brain through the panic. Turns out, even experts believe tarot can be an actual self-care tool, in case you’re available to it.
What’s tarot, tho? Let me explain.
But really, it’s a simple approach to reflect and tap into intuition, using an illustrative deck of cards. On a basic level, you draw one card (or several) and use the suit, symbols, characters, and imagery to indicate information or a narrative, then use those lessons and conclusions to your life. (For instance: Pulling the High Priestess card, shown in photo above, which depicts a woman sitting with hands in lap, is generally translated to imply it’s time to reflect and trust your own instinct in a circumstance.)
I first got into tarot by accident. I went through a phase when I was writing lots of (really horrible ) fiction, and one of my personalities was a quixotic card reader. I picked up a copy of Rachel Pollack’s seminal Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom as research and was hooked by the end of the introduction. I went into it with the very same misconceptions a lot of folks have, such as the idea that tarot is a silly carnival attraction. What I came to learn is that the cards can be a manual for self-exploration. When folks inquire, "Well, overlook ‘Can you just see exactly what you would like to see? "
"Tarot exemplifies the obstacles and triumphs of the human encounter. "
There’s a good reason so many men and women identify with the images in their cards. (I say "so many men and women " because earnings for tarot decks from U.S. Games Systems, a top tarot deck publisher in the U.S., have doubled annually for the previous five years–and revenue in the psychic solutions and astrology industry climbed 1.6 percent each year between 2014 and 2019, to an estimated $2.2 billion.) "Tarot exemplifies the obstacles and triumphs of the human encounter," explains Jessica Dore, LSW, a tarot professional and social worker. "They’re a tool that can get one to look inside. It’s a reason to ask, "What’s happening with me? "
In modern life, it is harder than ever to ask yourself this question. We’re constantly buzzing from work to work to societal responsibility, and every moment in between we’re on our own phones, scrolling and chatting. Carving out time to sit down, shuffle these cards, then try to interpret, through their illustrations, whatever challenges you’re facing, is really just a way of forcing yourself to consider how you’re feeling.
"Many people with depression and anxiety can get really stuck in their minds, so any clinic that stimulates thinking from another perspective has the potential to be pretty beneficial. "
In fact, be it Reiki or tarot cards or conventional religious practices such as prayer, "spiritual relationship is generally associated with greater well-being, and that’s even when you control for other factors," Carmichael says. "If you consider tarot in the spiritual realm, and if these cards cause one to reflect, it can be provocative in a good way. "
I think this mental connection to the divine is the reason tarot is very effective for me. It’s not only about how I feel ; the images remind me I’m connected to a larger human story. "When we pull a tarot card, we believe noticed," Dore explains. It’s similar to asking for a sign from your higher energy and getting you, or reading something (if it’s religious material or even just an wonderful publication ) that contrasts with you deeply.
Wanna tell your fortune?
The great thing about tarot is that you really can’t mess it up. Your clinic is exactly what you make of it, along with your interpretations of these cards are just that: yours. To begin, all you have to do is locate a deck that you feel connected to, Dore states. Packs usually come with a basic interpretive booklet, also, so that you can begin there or buy a guidebook (see "Build Your Starter Kit," below). Dore recommends pulling one card once or twice each day and employing a journal to write down your observations and feelings about what the cards mean for you. Your investigations of these cards are equally as important as (if not more significant than) how more experienced readers view them. Try readings on your own pals. With practice you will get better at leaning in your intuition, as I did.
"Tarot is all about tuning in and learning about yourself. "
If you would like to use the cards as a tool for managing symptoms of depression or anxiety, keep in mind one critical principle: "Spirituality is not a replacement for healthcare," as Carmichael states. Helpful as tarot may be for you personally, it’s crucial to recall it’s not a cure on its own (you know that ) .
It’s also crucial to recognize that using the cards to get stress relief or as an aid to understanding your psychological landscape is extremely different from relying upon them for important conclusions. "If they’re eclipsing your awareness of personal service instead of mainly increasing your consciousness, that’s exactly what I would watch out for," Carmichael says.
At the conclusion of the afternoon, "tarot is all about tuning in and learning about yourself," Dore states. When you do so?
