Conference: What is(Music)dramaturgy? Music in Theatre – Theatre in Music

On behalf of the artistic research program Knowledge and Skills for a Postdramatic Theatre: Welcome to the conference What is (music)dramaturgy? Music in Theatre – Theatre in Music!

The term music-dramaturgy has traditionally its connotations and its traditions attached to certain genres like musical and opera. Through searching both deeper and broader after the music in theatre and theatre in music, the goal for the conference is to contribute to an expansion, or – if possible – a redefinition of what music-dramaturgy is and can be.

By inspecting theatre in music and music in theatre a two-sided focus will be directed on musicality and musical thought -, work-, and organization forms: On one side the focus is on the dramaturgical aspects of the musical expressions and forms which traditionally have been withheld from the dramaturgical outlook of stage- and movie arts. On the other side the search is upon the musicality of stage forms and theatrical expressions, which have rarely been examined and developed from a musical ear and music’s analytical forms of understanding.
